Mother’s Day on the Northern Beaches of Sydney

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to spoil all of the mum’s in your life on Sunday.  Whether it be your own mum, your partner’s, your wife, or even yourself if you’re a mum, there are plenty of great ways to celebrate the amazing role that mother’s play in our lives.  As a Northern Beaches local and a mum myself, I have done the research on your behalf to assist in making this Mother’s Day  the best ever. Here’s my top choices to make mum smile this Sunday!

1. Pilu at Freshwater

Pilu Freshwater

One of my personal all-time favourites! This Sardinian restaurant offers one of the world’s best fine dining experiences out there…and for us lucky Northern Beaches residents, it is located conveniently on Freshwater beach at the end of Moore Road. This restaurant is constantly winning awards, including the highly recognised Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food Guide Two Chef’s Hats award. Restaurateur, Giovanni Pilu, is the key ingredient behind Pilu Restaurant’s success. He is an icon in the food industry and held in the highest of regard. He regularly appears in the media, including the well-known TV show Masterchef. His first cookbook “A Sardinian Cookbook” just won The IACP Peoples’ Choice Award. On a local level, Pilu is heavily involved in our community. He supports Freshwater Surf Lifesaving Club and various other charities including Bestest, Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, and Bear Cottage.

Gift voucher’s for Pilu at Freshwater are available for any chosen amount and make the perfect gift for mum. My recommendation is to take advantage of the Taste of Italy lunch special. The menu changes every two weeks and focuses on different regions of Italy. Their affordable two course menu includes coffee and petit fours at $49pp, or choose their 3 course option for $59pp. Note: These specials are available on Tuesdays – Friday’s lunchtime and are running until the end of September 2013.

2. Sensora Balgowlah

sensora salon

Conveniently located in the Stockland Balgowlah shopping complex (off Sydney road and Condamine Street), this day spa/beauty salon is a true treat. On arrival, the friendly staff briskly whisk you away into a relaxing treatment room which seems to somehow dissolve all the day to day stresses that comes with being a mum (think screaming kids, chaotic schedules, busy jobs etc). The peace and quiet in the treatment rooms is amazingly therapeutic. The staff are knowledgable and helpful, never pushy and rushed. The environment is clean and modern plus the salon features a hair and makeup bar with a beautiful range of products to choose from. Services include microzone treatments, facials, massages, photorejuvenation, microdermabrasions, peels, hair and make-up and more. For a full list of services see

Sensora is exclusively offering our clients a FREE limited edition Willow designer leather clutch with the purchase of a $100 or more gift voucher for Mother’s Day! Simply mention “WILLOW” at the time of purchase to be entitled to this offer. Note: Not valid with any other offer.  Offer valid until 12th May 2013 whilst stocks last.

3. The Belrose Hotel

A great all-weather family friendly option for mum this Sunday. The Belrose Hotel is a firm family favourite for Northern Beaches residents…and with good reason. The modern interiors feature an oversized bistro plus a casual lounge area. There are charming fire places, indoor and outdoor spaces, decent family friendly food, a bar, and most importantly…the largest softplay playground of any hotel in Australia split into two sections for under fours and a larger area for the bigger kids. The staff are amazingly accepting of kids, so the odd spill or cry is not going to cause any major dramas.

This is a really practical choice for Mother’s Day for those who have young children. The stress levels will be kept at a bare minimum compared to most restaurant experiences. I know my four children declare this as their number one choice…and who am I to argue since most of my time at The Belrose Hotel is spent relaxing, eating and talking rather than trying to control and entertain my children the entire duration!

For a free coffee or glass of bubbly this Mother’s Day, phone in advance to book a table at the Belrose Hotel. Be sure to mention this offer when booking your table.

4. The Newport Arms

A popular choice year after year for Mother’s Day. The Newport Arms is an ideal location for a relaxed lunch or lazy afternoon cocktail in the sun whilst soaking in amazing water views over Church Point, Scotland Island, Bayview and Ku-Ring-Gai National Park. With live entertainment, Australia’s largest waterfront beer garden, three children’s playgrounds, two garden bars, a lounge bar, cocktail bar, A La Carte Terrace on Pittwater restaurant, bistro, cafe, TAB, Fox Sports and Sky channel, it is pretty easy to say there is something for everyone. Most areas allow for wheelchair and pram access which makes it easy for all generations of the family. The only downfall is the huge crowds that is likely to be drawn to The Newport Arms on Mother’s Day, making parking and seating highly sought after. Nonetheless, it is worthwhile battling the crowds to enjoy this well designed family friendly venue to celebrate Mother’s Day.

5. Your Own Family Home With Loved Ones

With so many beautiful homes on the Northern Beaches, my final recommendation is to spend the day spoiling mum at home. Let her sleep in, put her feet up, read a magazine, enjoy the water or bushland views (if you are lucky enough to have them) and spend precious time with your family and extended family. If you are still keen to spend up, why not give mum the best gift of all by donating some money to her favourite charity – one that really means a lot to her. What a nice way to make mum smile!

Happy Mother’s Day to you all. We hope you and your mum’s all have a lovely day!
